If you're constantly being told you are too fussy and to stop moaning about poorly-designed websites or apps, then giving feedback via UserTesting could be perfect for you. I do it for the enjoyment, rather than the remuneration for time spent doing online tests or being interviewed face-to-face over Zoom. For some, it could be a small way to supplement an income, but it will never be a money-earner. No specialist skills are needed - just an ability to follow instructions, critique if required, and to communicate your opinions effectively. Test notifications come as a 'ping' whilst you're logged on. Many are picked up by others very quickly, so may disappear almost immediately. There's then a series of screening questions to be answered, of course, to make sure you're the right fit for the client. But too many screening tests make you jump through silly hoops like reading and signing a NDA agreement BEFORE they ask the simplest of screening questions like whether or not you're employed. I find this a quite frustrating and time-wasting, but my guess is that the clients are writing and determining the order of questions, not UserTesting themselves. Most tests are in English, but a few require native speakers of other languages. Most tests are done online, requiring screen and audio recording and (occasionally) a webcam to record your face as you read the test scenario, follow the test script, then interacting with a live or mocked-up website. Once you accept a test, you're given 15 minutes before you need to start screen recording and begin the test. This is great - it gives you time to nip to the toilet, grab a coffee, warn the family to be quiet and plug in the webcam or headset. Remuneration for the time spent helping out is usually around $10 per 15-20 minute test, paid after via PayPal after 14 days or so. Live interviews take longer and remunerate better. To join the UserTesting panel you'll first take and submit a test interview, on which you'll get helpful feedback on ways to improve. (I was told to avoid long pauses and get rid of the loud clock!) I do have mixed feelings about the UserTesting website. For a company working to improve other people's usability experience, I don't feel enough attention has been put into it's own interface. There is no way to filter out test notifications for those relating to major areas of disinterest (such as gambling) or to exclude all Mobile tests, for example. My iPhone is unable to go beyond iOS 12, so I had to deleted the mobile testing app which was getting quite flaky, and now needs iOS13+ to run at all, but why is there no way to stop mobile test notifications from coming through? I'm retired, and have already reported my annual income, yet regularly get asked about it and then screened out. Why am I getting these test notifications in the first place if I'm clearly ineligible, and they have the information about me already? These should be a simple thing for a UX company to fix. My big frustration is the rarity of any feedback/star-rating from clients - especially if we've spent time over Zoom doing a live test/interview. For me, knowing I've done a good job is important, as is knowing I could do better if I'm underperforming. Since May 2021, not one of the 20+ tests I have done have left comments or even a star-rating for me at all, which is far below normal, so I'm wondering if there's currently a glitch in their system preventing client feedback from being given. If you're constantly online, you'll get tons and tons of test notifications (I've taken 4 screeners whilst drafting this, though did not fit any of their requirements). So you will certainly spend an awful lot of time responding to test notifications, but actually take very few of them. This can seem disappointing, but if you take the work seriously (and remember there a very earnest client wanting your honest opinions) this is a really fun and interesting way to help people improve their services or understand how real-world people feel about things.
