During the Covid-19 lockdown in late March 2020 I joined UserTesting, never having done anything like this before. I'm retired, and wasn't looking for cash - just something fun and interesting to do. After submitting a recorded test session, I was approved and did my first paid survey (getting positive feedback, including mention of an annoying ticking clock in my room). I've since done 20 paid surveys with them over the last two months, most paying $10 for 15-20 minutes work. One was a live Zoom interview, with a researcher that paid more. Only one survey has irked me - taking 50 minutes to complete for just $10 reward. That aside, I get paid via PayPal exactly 7 days later, and I simply keep the UserTesting dashboard open for new screening opportunities. These alert you to possible tests on desktop or on mobile, and their mobile app also lets you know if new screenings are available. Reading around the subject, UserTesting is highly regarded in its field, and I've had fun giving feedback on things that I can relate to. Nobody this side of the testing fence is ever going to make a living from helping clients improve their products, but it's fun and I have no regrets in joining them. I genuinely don't understand some of the negative reviews I've seen here. Maybe they were trying too hard; being honest is the key to being a helpful tester.
