Excellent tool to scale UX Research across a team with limited resources
What do you like best about the product?
As one of two full-time researchers on the UX team at my organization, I like that I can step my design peers (and others) through the really simple platform, and with some guidance on best practices get them experimenting and testing out their designs quickly. It's been really helpful to offer this tool as a means to get answers in an Agile setting.
What do you dislike about the product?
The team at UserTesting is constantly reaching out and improving the platform, I can't think of anything I dislike at the moment. Initially I had a problem with the 15 participant max on the panel, but it hasn't been an issue. In the few cases where I need a broader data set, I duplicate tests and run multiple rounds.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
My company had considered similar platforms in the past, we made the choice to go with UserTesting based on a proof of concept trial. The team was very supportive of this, we also ran one when they were rolling out the Live Conversation feature. I recommend doing a POC to see if it suits your organization's needs.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The UserTesting platform has helped us quickly shape new features, revise workflows and get answers on preferences to deliver the best experiences. The best part about this – aside from getting an answer much faster than could be agreed on in any meeting where everyone feels strongly that they have the better solution– is that when an answer is found, there's no personal stake in the game. If it turns out the design doesn't perform well, you go back to the data, review it, try something else and test it again. It allows for a much healthier cross-functional team dynamic and keeps teams more productive by staying focused on the business goals.
Good platform but has some problems with customer care
What do you like best about the product?
ability to record everything continuously.
What do you dislike about the product?
Customer Care - it seems that you don't care about your customers and don't care to have new or renewal customers.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Consider your worldwide customers
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Usability testing
UserTesting makes usability research accessible to your whole org
What do you like best about the product?
The ease of recruiting test participants, and the ability to have next-day results.
What do you dislike about the product?
Planning, writing, watching, and summarizing tests still takes a lonnng time.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Instead of making full prototypes, consider sharing screenshots of existing products to get user's impressions of other products/sites in your space.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We try to validate our hypothesis to figure out what makes the most impact by getting user feedback early in the product development process. It's helped up answer our questions and get internal alignment on how we prioritize what we build.
UserTesting.com has given our design team time and confidence
What do you like best about the product?
The quality of the tests we run is astonishing. No matter how niche we screen, the participants UserTesting finds us are intelligent, thoughtful, prepped and always give the most thorough, valuable responses.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes it's difficult to predict when a screener will take a long time to fulfill, and you might not get responses for weeks. It would be good if, while writing the screener, UserTesting were able to give a live estimate of time, even if not accurate.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I have always used user testing as a UX tool for designing good solutions, however since working with UserTesting.com, now we more often use it to prove or disprove an assumption, or question something we're not sure about in a design process. Being able to throw up a test overnight and have results in the morning has helped us be lean and move faster through design processes.
UserTesting panel is great!
What do you like best about the product?
I love how easy UserTesting makes it to recruit and test. Time to recruit and test is usually under an hour; this makes it easy for me to make changes and test again! Panel is thoughtful and great at speaking aloud.
What do you dislike about the product?
The pricing is too high for small startups that don't run that many tests.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Great if you run a LOT of tests. Expensive otherwise. I've recruited mostly for a general panel - likely would be hard to get specialized participants.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Needs analysis, usability testing. The tests we ran identified key adoption issues.
Review by a Senior UX Designer
What do you like best about the product?
I like how there are transcripts provided. Also when switching between taking notes to transcript, it marks where in the transcript the video is currently on.
What do you dislike about the product?
Inviting my own users to user test an app in-person. Currently "My Recruit" does not work for mobile apps.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Recruiting users is made a breeze. I can get user testing within one day.
Great Platform for Remote Testing
What do you like best about the product?
The tool keeps improving to meet our needs. With the addition of Live Conversations and other features and the quick responses from the UserTesting team, this product is becoming invaluable to our UX Research effort.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes it takes a long time to fill surveys when we don't think our criteria is too narrow. We were unaware of some of the default settings and had to have them changed in order to improve our recruiting. Wish there was branching logic for screeners and the ability to randomize task order or combine multiple studies to accomplish this.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This platform makes it really easy to get feedback quickly. There are product limitations, such as the inability to copy a study that was designed for a prototype to a study of a website (which you might want as the design is maturing).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Remote testing, testing competitive products.
Fast, convenient, no more excuses to not test!
What do you like best about the product?
The speed and the convenience! There were no excuses left for my team to not test designs ad prototypes. We were able to see the results within hours and settle debates between the designers and the product teams as well as getting feedback from targeted users and update the next iteration of design accordingly.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some of the users are professional testers and give the feedback that they think you want to hear. It'd be great to test with the inexperienced users who offer their genuine opinions without the fear of getting low ratings. Also editing a showreel video is a real pain. I spend an entire morning on clipping videos to show a one minute clip to my managers about the result of the test. After a couple hours I gave up, downloaded the videos and make the clip in Adobe Premiere. It only took 10 minutes! It'd be great if we could highlight some findings and have them as a collective and independent to each test. Something like our biggest takeaways across all the tests for all the products accessible to all the usertesting users in the team. Each time we ran a test the findings were used by that specific product team and the designers who were involved in that project. It'd be great to have the highlights of that study available in a text format to all the other users. The price is really steep. It makes it so much harder to get the approvals necessary for getting the tool and convincing executives that it's a great investment.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Go for it! It's worth the cost. Scheduling testing sessions and finding the right participants aren't a problem anymore. It's going to increase the efficiency of your research workflow tremendously.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We used Usertesting to test our financial products both internally and externally. My recruit feature was especially helpful when we wanted to test a prototype with internal users. We also benefited from the 5-second test as well as the balanced comparison feature. The Balanced comparison helped us a lot in choosing a design over another and making sure that the users don't have a recency bias. It also helped with defending design decisions with stakeholders as we had user driven data to back up our design choices.
Love this tool for quick and valuable feedback
What do you like best about the product?
Usertesting allows us to get feedback about our website from real people, very quickly. You can screen the users to ensure they meet your criteria. Generally we get results back within an hour, it has never taken more than a day. I like that you can take notes directly in the videos, so that you can easily find your spot later on. You can also create highlight reels and share them with your team members.
What do you dislike about the product?
It would be nice if I could do all my analysis and notes in user testing's site. Right now I am able to create notes on the video, and share clips, but I'd love to have a space to easily record and share higher level insights. No, you don't get the subtle observations that you would in an in person usability test, but this tool lets you get quick feedback to build up to an eventual in person test that may be more valuable than if you hadn't done any online tests first.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Take the time to speak with their support and customer representatives, they are very helpful.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
With this tool we are able to get quick, valuable feedback on our website. We use this to make decisions and changes to our site with the goal of giving users what they really want.
